How to become an Approved Manager

To become an Approved Manager in WA licensees and individuals must complete the Course in Management of Licensed Premises (52863WA) core unit, more commonly known as MLP1. The AHA WA is officially approved by the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries to deliver the MLP1 Approved Manager core unit, a pre-requisite in the application to become an Approved Manager in WA.

If you wish to become an Approved Manager in WA, please follow the below steps. Note: In WA there are two types of Approved Manager.

Unrestricted Approved Manager

In WA, an Unrestricted Approved Manager qualification allows individuals to work at all types of licensed premises.

Approved Manager ID cards are valid for five years and can be renewed online at the Department of Licensing website prior to expiry.

You can become an Unrestricted Approved Manager by following the below steps.

  • Register and complete the AHA WA Approved Manager training course to receive your accredited certificate.
  • Apply for a national police clearance as part of your application. Please note a National police clearance (NPC) must be less than three months old from the date of issue to be accepted by the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries.
  • Complete the required online steps at the Department of Licensing website before printing a form called an application summary to bring to a Post Office along with your training certificate and national police clearance.

To complete the process, the post office will take your photo for your Approved Manager card, confirm your identification as per your Application Summary and request payment of a fee to the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries. Once payment has been made you will receive a receipt allowing you to act as an Approved Manager until the application has been determined by the Department of Licensing.

IMPORTANT: You must hold onto this receipt as you may be requested to present it by an authorised officer.

Restricted Approved Manager

In WA, a Restricted Approved Manager qualification allows individuals to work at Occasional, Club and Club Restricted licensed premises only.

You can become an Unrestricted Approved Manager by following the below steps.

  • Register and complete the AHA WA Responsible Service of Alcohol (SITHFAB021) training course online training course.
  • Apply for a national police clearance as part of your application. Please note a National police clearance (NPC) must be less than three months old from the date of issue to be accepted by the Department of Local Government, Sport, and Cultural Industries.
  • Complete the required online steps at the Department of Licensing website before printing a form called an application summary to bring to a Post Office along with your training certificate and national police clearance.
